Date Yo’Self

People always say the best relationship you should have is the one you have with yourself. I agree that in order to have healthy relationships with others you must first learn to love the person in the mirror.

There are many ways to get to know yourself and develop your self-love. Write in a journal, spend quiet time alone to meditate or reflect, take yourself on a date. Yes, you read that right, I said take yourself out on a date! It’s not as crazy as it sounds I promise. Just like you’d go out on a date with a potential romantic partner or a lunch date with friends, you should spend time alone doing things you enjoy (or don’t enjoy- after all if you don’t try new things how will you know your likes and dislikes).

This weekend I took myself out on a date. I love seeing plays and musicals live so I took a trip to the Mark Taper Forum in Downtown LA to see August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Set in 1927 Chicago, the play features a recording session at a white- owned music studio with “Mother of the Blues” Ma Rainey and her band. My imaginary grandmother, the one and only, Phylicia Rashad directed this production. The cast was absolutely amazing and I had an awesome front row seat that made the experience even more epic!

After the play, I went to dinner at a restaurant in Echo Park called Sage Vegan Bistro. Although I’m not a vegan, I am a foodie and after hearing many good reviews about Sage I decided to try it out. I was not disappointed! The Goatless Greek Quinoa Kale Salad and the Hearty New England Style Potato Chowder Soup I ordered were amazingly light and refreshing and the wait staff was super attentive and friendly.

Of course, I couldn’t end the night without a proper selfie. Overall I’d have to say it was a very pleasant date. Definitely looking forward to date number two 🙂

Where would you go on a personal date?
